The only problem is that the basic technique is fairly simple (turning cards) but the difficult part is knowing how to thread the cards to get the pattern you want. That's something that I don't know yet, and the book comes in handy so I'd recommend buying a book. And yes, I think one can easily learn it from a book and experience. Of course I can show you!
